ומנא דוד ית עמא די עמיה ומני עליהון רבני אלפין ורבני מאותא:
mawtha wrbny alpyn rbny elyhwn wmny emyh dy ema yth dwd wmna
David counted the people who were with him, and set captains of thousands and captains of hundreds over them.

ושלח דוד ית עמא תלתא ביד יואב ותלתא ביד אבישי בר צרויה אחוהי דיואב ותלתא ביד אתי גתאה ואמר מלכא לעמא מפק אפק אף אנא עמכון:
emkwn ana ap apq mpq lema mlka wamr gthah athy byd wthltha dywab akhwhy tsrwyh br abyshy byd wthltha ywab byd thltha ema yth dwd wshlkh
David sent the people out, a third part under the hand of Joab, and a third part under the hand of Abishai the son of Zeruiah, Joab’s brother, and a third part under the hand of Ittai the Gittite. The king said to the people, “I will also surely go out with you myself.”

ואמר עמא לא תפוק ארי אם מערק נערוק לא ישוון עלנא לבא ואם יתקטלון פלגנא לא ישוון עלנא לבא ארי כען את יכיל למסעד כותנא עסרא אלפין וכען טב ארי תצלי עלנא מקרתא למסעד:
lmsed mqrtha elna thtsly ary Tb wken alpyn esra kwthna lmsed ykyl ath ken ary lba elna yshwwn la plgna ythqTlwn wam lba elna yshwwn la nerwq merq am ary thpwq la ema wamr
But the people said, “You shall not go out, for if we flee away, they will not care for us, neither if half of us die, will they care for us. But you are worth ten thousand of us. Therefore now it is better that you are ready to help us out of the city.”

ואמר להון מלכא דתקין בעיניכון אעביד וקם מלכא על כיבש אורח תרעא וכל עמא נפקו למאתן ולאלפין:
wlalpyn lmathn npqw ema wkl threa awrkh kybsh el mlka wqm aebyd beynykwn dthqyn mlka lhwn wamr
The king said to them, “I will do what seems best to you.” The king stood beside the gate, and all the people went out by hundreds and by thousands.

ופקיד מלכא ית יואב וית אבישי וית אתי למימר אסתמרו לי בעולימא באבשלום וכל עמא שמעו כד פקיד מלכא ית כל רברביא על עיסק אבשלום:
abshlwm eysq el rbrbya kl yth mlka pqyd kd shmew ema wkl babshlwm bewlyma ly asthmrw lmymr athy wyth abyshy wyth ywab yth mlka wpqyd
The king commanded Joab and Abishai and Ittai, saying, “Deal gently for my sake with the young man Absalom.” All the people heard when the king commanded all the captains concerning Absalom.

ונפק עמא לחקלא לקדמות ישראל והות קרבא בחורשא דבית אפרים:
aprym dbyth bkhwrsha qrba whwth yshral lqdmwth lkhqla ema wnpq
So the people went out into the field against Israel; and the battle was in the forest of Ephraim.

ואתברו תמן עם ישראל קדם עבדי דוד והות תמן מחתא רבתא ביומא ההוא עסרין אלפין:
alpyn esryn hhwa bywma rbtha mkhtha thmn whwth dwd ebdy qdm yshral em thmn wathbrw
The people of Israel were struck there before David’s servants, and there was a great slaughter there that day of twenty thousand men.

והוו תמן עבדי קרבא מתבדרין על אפי כל ארעא ואסגיאת חית חורשא לקטלא בעמא מדקטילת חרבא ביומא ההוא:
hhwa bywma khrba mdqTylth bema lqTla khwrsha khyth wasgyath area kl apy el mthbdryn qrba ebdy thmn whww
For the battle was there spread over the surface of all the country, and the forest devoured more people that day than the sword devoured.

ואתערע אבשלום קדם עבדי דוד ואבשלום רכיב על כודנתא ועלת כודנתא תחות סוכא דבוטמא רבא ואתאחד רישיה בבוטמא ואתלי בין שמיא ובין ארעא וכודנתא די תחותוהי עברת:
ebrth thkhwthwhy dy wkwdntha area wbyn shmya byn wathly bbwTma ryshyh wathakhd rba dbwTma swka thkhwth kwdntha welth kwdntha el rkyb wabshlwm dwd ebdy qdm abshlwm wathere
Absalom happened to meet David’s servants. Absalom was riding on his mule, and the mule went under the thick boughs of a great oak; and his head caught hold of the oak, and he was hanging between the sky and earth; and the mule that was under him went on.

וחזא גברא חד וחוי ליואב ואמר הא חזיתי ית אבשלום תלי בבוטמא:
bbwTma thly abshlwm yth khzythy ha wamr lywab wkhwy khd gbra wkhza
A certain man saw it, and told Joab, and said, “Behold, I saw Absalom hanging in an oak.”

ואמר יואב לגברא דמחוי ליה והא חזיתא ומא דין לא מחיתהו תמן ורמיתהי לארעא ועלי פון למתן לך עסר סלעין דכסף ואספנקי חדא:
khda waspnqy dksp sleyn esr lk lmthn pwn wely larea wrmythhy thmn mkhythhw la dyn wma khzytha wha lyh dmkhwy lgbra ywab wamr
Joab said to the man who told him, “Behold, you saw it, and why didn’t you strike him there to the ground? I would have given you ten pieces of silver and a sash.”

ואמר גברא ליואב ולו אנא תקל על כפי אלף סלעין דכסף לא אושיט ידי בבר מלכא ארי קדמנא פקיד מלכא יתך וית אבישי וית אתי למימר אסתמרו לי בעולימא באבשלום:
babshlwm bewlyma ly asthmrw lmymr athy wyth abyshy wyth ythk mlka pqyd qdmna ary mlka bbr ydy awshyT la dksp sleyn alp kpy el thql ana wlw lywab gbra wamr
The man said to Joab, “Though I should receive a thousand pieces of silver in my hand, I still wouldn’t stretch out my hand against the king’s son; for in our hearing the king commanded you and Abishai and Ittai, saying, ‘Beware that no one touch the young man Absalom.’

או פון עבדית בנפשי שקר וכל מדעם לא יתכסא מן מלכא ואת תתעתד מקביל:
mqbyl ththethd wath mlka mn ythksa la mdem wkl shqr bnpshy ebdyth pwn aw
Otherwise, if I had dealt falsely against his life (and there is no matter hidden from the king), then you yourself would have set yourself against me.”

ואמר יואב הלא מבכין אישרי קדמך ונסיב תלתא גססין בידיה וקבעינון בלבא דאבשלום ועד כען קים בגו בוטמא:
bwTma bgw qym ken wed dabshlwm blba wqbeynwn bydyh gssyn thltha wnsyb qdmk ayshry mbkyn hla ywab wamr
Then Joab said, “I’m not going to wait like this with you.” He took three darts in his hand and thrust them through Absalom’s heart while he was still alive in the middle of the oak.

ואסתחרו עסרא עולמיא נטלי זיניה דיואב ומחו ית אבשלום וקטלוהי:
wqTlwhy abshlwm yth wmkhw dywab zynyh nTly ewlmya esra wasthkhrw
Ten young men who bore Joab’s armor surrounded and struck Absalom, and killed him.

ותקע יואב בשופרא ותב עמא מלמרדף בתר ישראל ארי מנע יואב ית עמא:
ema yth ywab mne ary yshral bthr mlmrdp ema wthb bshwpra ywab wthqe
Joab blew the trumpet, and the people returned from pursuing after Israel; for Joab held the people back.

ונסיבו ית אבשלום ורמו יתיה בחורשא לגו קומצא רבה ואקימו עלוהי דגור אבנין רב לחדא וכל ישראל אפכו גבר לקרווהי:
lqrwwhy gbr apkw yshral wkl lkhda rb abnyn dgwr elwhy waqymw rbh qwmtsa lgw bkhwrsha ythyh wrmw abshlwm yth wnsybw
They took Absalom and cast him into a great pit in the forest, and raised over him a very great heap of stones. Then all Israel fled, each to his own tent.

ואבשלום נסיב ואקים ליה בחיוהי ית קמתא די במישר מלכא ארי אמר לית לי בר קים בדיל לאדכרא שמי וקרא לקמתא על שמיה וקרא לה אתרא דאבשלום עד יומא הדין:
hdyn ywma ed dabshlwm athra lh wqra shmyh el lqmtha wqra shmy ladkra bdyl qym br ly lyth amr ary mlka bmyshr dy qmtha yth bkhywhy lyh waqym nsyb wabshlwm
Now Absalom in his lifetime had taken and reared up for himself the pillar which is in the king’s valley, for he said, “I have no son to keep my name in memory.” He called the pillar after his own name. It is called Absalom’s monument, to this day.

ואחימעץ בר צדוק אמר ארהוט כען ואבסר ית מלכא ארי אתפרע ליה יי מיד בעלי דבבוהי:
dbbwhy bely myd yy lyh athpre ary mlka yth wabsr ken arhwT amr tsdwq br wakhymets
Then Ahimaaz the son of Zadok said, “Let me now run and carry the king news, how Yahweh has avenged him of his enemies.”

ואמר ליה יואב לא גבר כשר לבסרא את יומא דין ותבסר ביום אוחרן ויומא הדין לא תבסר אלהין דבר מלכא מית:
myth mlka dbr alhyn thbsr la hdyn wywma awkhrn bywm wthbsr dyn ywma ath lbsra kshr gbr la ywab lyh wamr
Joab said to him, “You must not be the bearer of news today, but you must carry news another day. But today you must carry no news, because the king’s son is dead.”

ואמר יואב לכושי אזיל חוי למלכא דחזיתא וסגיד כושי ליואב ורהט:
wrhT lywab kwshy wsgyd dkhzytha lmlka khwy azyl lkwshy ywab wamr
Then Joab said to the Cushite, “Go, tell the king what you have seen!” The Cushite bowed himself to Joab, and ran.

ואוסיף עוד אחימעץ בר צדוק ואמר ליואב ויהי מה ארהוט כען אף אנא בתר כושי ואמר יואב למא דנן את רהיט ברי ולך לית בסורא מתיהב:
mthyhb bswra lyth wlk bry rhyT ath dnn lma ywab wamr kwshy bthr ana ap ken arhwT mh wyhy lywab wamr tsdwq br akhymets ewd wawsyp
Then Ahimaaz the son of Zadok said yet again to Joab, “But come what may, please let me also run after the Cushite.” Joab said, “Why do you want to run, my son, since you will have no reward for the news?”

ויהי מא בכדין ארהוט ואמר ליה רהוט ורהט אחימעץ באורח מישרא וקדים ית כושי:
kwshy yth wqdym myshra bawrkh akhymets wrhT rhwT lyh wamr arhwT bkdyn ma wyhy
“But come what may,” he said, “I will run.” He said to him, “Run!” Then Ahimaaz ran by the way of the Plain, and outran the Cushite.

ודוד יתיב בין תרין תרעיא והליך סכואה על אגר תרעא על שורא וזקף ית עינוהי וחזא והא גברא רהיט בלחודוהי:
blkhwdwhy rhyT gbra wha wkhza eynwhy yth wzqp shwra el threa agr el skwah whlyk threya thryn byn ythyb wdwd
Now David was sitting between the two gates; and the watchman went up to the roof of the gate to the wall, and lifted up his eyes and looked, and, behold, a man running alone.

וקרא סכואה וחוי למלכא ואמר מלכא אם בלחודוהי הוא בסורתא בפומיה ואזל מיזל וקריב:
wqryb myzl wazl bpwmyh bswrtha hwa blkhwdwhy am mlka wamr lmlka wkhwy skwah wqra
The watchman shouted and told the king. The king said, “If he is alone, there is news in his mouth.” He came closer and closer.

וחזא סכואה גברא אחרנא רהיט וקרא סכואה לנטר תרעא ואמר הא גברא רהיט בלחודוהי ואמר מלכא אף דין מבסר:
mbsr dyn ap mlka wamr blkhwdwhy rhyT gbra ha wamr threa lnTr skwah wqra rhyT akhrna gbra skwah wkhza
The watchman saw another man running; and the watchman called to the gatekeeper and said, “Behold, a man running alone!” The king said, “He also brings news.”

ואמר סכואה אנא חזי ית ריהטא דקדמאה כריהטא דאחימעץ בר צדוק ואמר מלכא גבר טב דין ואף בסורא טבא ייתי:
yythy Tba bswra wap dyn Tb gbr mlka wamr tsdwq br dakhymets kryhTa dqdmah ryhTa yth khzy ana skwah wamr
The watchman said, “I think the running of the first one is like the running of Ahimaaz the son of Zadok.” The king said, “He is a good man, and comes with good news.”

וקרא אחימעץ ואמר למלכא שלם וסגיד למלכא על אפוהי על ארעא ואמר בריך יי אלהך דמסר ית גבריא דארימו ית ידיהון ברבוני מלכא:
mlka brbwny ydyhwn yth darymw gbrya yth dmsr alhk yy bryk wamr area el apwhy el lmlka wsgyd shlm lmlka wamr akhymets wqra
Ahimaaz called, and said to the king, “All is well.” He bowed himself before the king with his face to the earth, and said, “Blessed is Yahweh your God, who has delivered up the men who lifted up their hand against my lord the king!”

ואמר מלכא שלם לעולימא לאבשלום ואמר אחימעץ חזיתי המונא סגיאה בתר דשלח ית עבדא דמלכא יואב וית עבדך ולא ידעית מה:
mh ydeyth wla ebdk wyth ywab dmlka ebda yth dshlkh bthr sgyah hmwna khzythy akhymets wamr labshlwm lewlyma shlm mlka wamr
The king said, “Is it well with the young man Absalom?” Ahimaaz answered, “When Joab sent the king’s servant, even me your servant, I saw a great tumult, but I don’t know what it was.”
30
ואמר מלכא אסתחר אתעתד הכא ואסתחר וקם:
wqm wasthkhr hka athethd asthkhr mlka wamr
The king said, “Come and stand here.” He came and stood still.
31
והא כושי אתא ואמר כושי יתבסר רבוני מלכא ארי אתפרע לך יי יומא דין מיד כל דקמו עלך:
elk dqmw kl myd dyn ywma yy lk athpre ary mlka rbwny ythbsr kwshy wamr atha kwshy wha
Behold, the Cushite came. The Cushite said, “Good news for my lord the king, for Yahweh has avenged you today of all those who rose up against you.”
32
ואמר מלכא לכושי השלם לעולימא לאבשלום ואמר כושי יהון כעולימא סנאי רבוני מלכא וכל דקמו עלך לבישא:
lbysha elk dqmw wkl mlka rbwny snay kewlyma yhwn kwshy wamr labshlwm lewlyma hshlm lkwshy mlka wamr
The king said to the Cushite, “Is it well with the young man Absalom?” The Cushite answered, “May the enemies of my lord the king, and all who rise up against you to do you harm, be as that young man is.”
